Question:

How long does my dog spend in Quarantine if I bring it to the USA?

I was wondering if anyone knows how long a dog spends in quarantine (on average) when you bring it in to the States. I'm thinking about buying a dog when I go home and bringing it back with me once I get my visa and move the US for good, but I might just wait and buy a dog in the US.

The dog will be from Australia. It will have NO dingo/wild dog blood. It will definitely be pure bred (old habit, my family has always bought animals from good breeders) and most likely to be a pug or mini schnauzer (so, a smaller dog).

I've heard it'll be three months, I've heard sometimes it's less depending on what vaccines etc that the dog has had already (my dog is likely to be fully dewormed/up to date with shots when I bring it) and I've heard sometimes it's more depending on the country.

  1. There is no quarantine requirement for fully vaccinated dogs coming into the US.  Airlines and some states require a health certificate.  Beyond that, the dog must have a current rabies vaccine given more than 30 days prior to importation.  Look here for full details: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dq/animal/dogs...

  2. Congratulations!  You are the first person to want to know that!  I had one "genius" that wanted to know if they had to pay for cargo charges to bring a dog from Korea.  They apparently were ignorant of the fact that dogs are a delicacy over there and let alone that it was more than likely a scam to separate them from their money and that there is no dog.  Even if they actually do get a dog if it would have to be quarantined once it got to America!

Here is a suggestion.  We have more than enough dogs in America that are in need of good and loving homes that are in foster homes of volunteers of humane societies like my dog was, in shelters (like the SPCAs) and in pounds; so why don't you just wait until you get your perminant residency Visa for the U.S. and adopt a dog here.  Plus it would more than likely be cheaper to adopt one than to bring one from Down Under mate! (btw some of the dogs that are looking for good homes are purebred dogs)

  3. If the dog has had a rabies vaccine at least 1 month before entering the USA, there is no quarantine. If no vaccine, there is a quarantine. The dog must also be free of diseases or illnesses that can be passed to humans.

Depending on what airline you are flying with, you may need a health certificate, but you do not need one to enter the States.

You should check with the state and city you are going to move to. They may have laws about importing dogs.

  4. This is an excellent question, and I'm not sure of the answers.  I recommend calling Animal Control Services, or a local Humane Society.  Give them all of the details you have, and hopefully they'll give you a correct answer.  You should also contact Customs, and ask about live cargo crossing borders overseas.

Covers importing dogs to the US,there is no quarantine from Australia.Be aware the rules are different for Hawaii if you are planning any stops there.

  6. Why don't you try contacting the US customs office?  HEre's some info.

I strongly suggest you thoroughly research what paperwork and info you will need to expediate the process.  For example, the shots given to the dog, any health problems, origin of birth, etc.  The more info you have and the more accurate it is the faster your puppy will be processed.
