I was in the bar business for 20 years and rum was treated just like any other liquor.........meaning I would think it would last for years. I know we had some rum for at least a few years after it was opened

Indefinately, provided you have the cap and it is securely on. The only danger with distilled spirits is the alcohol evaporating (alcohol evaporates at a much lower temperature than water).

Weeks, as long as it's well sealed. It doesn't oxidise like wine.
