AFL level, 25 minutes of playing time for each of the four quarters.  Playing time is the time between the bounce of the ball to start (or re-start) the game until the first stoppage called by the controlling umpire (ump blows whistle due to goal scored, play interruption due to ball trapped, or free kick awarded.)  Whistle blown again to re-start time and play, etc.

Not a simple game; but one renowned for its action, speed and skill, and for the fact that the spectating crowd has so much opportunity to let off steam that fights and brawls are the exception rather than the rule that hooligan elements constantly create in other football codes.
