My daughter's soon to be ex abandoned her and their baby. Took the car, all their $ and hasn't called. Is there a time frame when it's considered abandonment and he loses his parental rights? Don't bother being rude. We already know he's an a**hole.

  1. i dunno  - how about never? He is the parent, he will always be the parent.

I foresee a troubled life ahead for your grandkid if you don't focus on what can be right in her life instead of creating drama from losers.

  2. He never completely loses his parental rights, unless he signs them away. During the divorce proceedings, there will be a custody hearing and she will likely be given sole custody during that.

  3. I was in a similar predicament, I had a baby when I was 17 and the father never even cared to see her, and my lawyer at the time said that after 2 years that he would have no parental rights. I hope this helps you and I hope your daughter and your granddaughter are doing okay.

  4. There is no such thing as 'abandonment' which causes a loss of parental rights.  He maintains those until they are removed by a court, something that usually only happens in cases of severe abuse.  Simple abandonment is not that level of incident, and in fact, removes any such abuse from the discussion.
