Not too long cuz the wax will not stick so much and it will hurt more.

About 1/4 inch which is about 6mm.

If it's very long, it will hurt a lot more and if it's too short, the wax will not grab the hair.

I would strongly recommend going to a salon rather than waxing yourself.  A professional beauty therapist knows what she (or he) is doing so you get better results without ingrown hairs when the hair grows back plus the process is less painful.
