I am going to Canada in May with my mother. Her passport will expire in July. I know that in Europe not only do you need a valid passport but it has to be valid for as much as 6 months past the return date. I was wondering if the held true for Canada. My guess is no but does anyone know for sure?

  1. 6 months

  2. It has to be "valid" - so only needs to be valid  for the length of your stay.  If you are driving, you can still use a birth certificate along with a drivers license instead of a passport for this year.

Although traveling with 6 months before expiry is a good practice, given line ups at passport offices because of stiffening regulations means Canada and US Customs are use to less.  I traveled last year with my passport expiring the day after I got back.

This is thge WHTI information - the current terms Canada and the US both follow.

  3. It  only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay.  See site below, enter your nationality and destination and click for the info.   It will tell you  that you may stay till the expiry date of your passport.  If you are driving to Canada, you do not even need passports.
