How long in advance do I need....?

I live in Saratoga Springs NY and I want to go to Rochester NY (about 5 hours away by car) and I want to take the train how long in advance do I need to get a train ticket?

I gather you're taking Amtrak?  You can buy it right before you get on board in Saratoga Springs.  However, it is cheaper to buy tickets as early as possible.  

You can purchase tickets online at amtrak.com or over the phone at 1800-USA-RAIL.  When you buy them you can either use your credit card at one of the kiosks in the station to get your ticket or go up the the ticket counter and give them the confirmation number you will receive when you purchase your ticket.
