  1. Railroad ties are typically (but not always) eight feet six inches long.  Standard ties are also nine inches wide and seven inches tall and are spaced about 3,000 to the mile.

  3. Yes.  And switch ties are considerably longer, 16' or more, to allow the rails to be supported as they diverge, when once again the standard ties are used.

  4. Ties come in all sorts of sizes, it's up to the engineering department of the particular railroad.  Most are either 7' or 8' long and 7"x9", though 6"x8" is also used somewhat.
