In the US, about almost 3 months. School ends on early June and ends either late August or early September. Depends on the different states.

In Switzerland, about 5 weeks.

It's so short because at the end of September most places have another 2-3 weeks off. Then between Christmas and Easter there are a lot of holidays, plus the kids ALL go skiing for a week so it all averages out at pretty average holiday time compared to other countries.
