The gestation period for a Thoroughbred horse, like any other breed of domestic horse, is approximately 11 months-- about 340 days.  (FWIW, the gestation period is longer for a colt than for a filly; maybe colts take longer to "cook".)

The Jockey Club investigates the pedigree of any foal with a gestation period significantly longer or shorter than the 340 day norm, on the assumption that the reported breeding date may have been incorrect.  (Other things that will trigger a Jockey Club investigation:  a report of a grey foal with no grey parent, or the birth of a foal of any color other than chestnut to two chestnut parents.)

Most stud farms open their breeding sheds around February 15th, and will rarely breed a mare earlier than that because of the risk of the foal arriving before January 1.  The Jockey Club has gotten very officious about this sort of thing the last couple years, and will send an investigator out to review facts surrounding births of foals reported as arriving around the first week of January, under the assumption that someone may be trying to pull a fast one on them and get an early-arriving foal in under the universal birthday.

Most farms close their breeding sheds to Northern Hemisphere mares around the 15th of July, because any foal conceived that late is going to be a June foal, and June foals are notoriously difficult to sell at auction and substantially less likely to race as 2-year-olds than foals born earlier.  This reflects poorly on a stallion's progeny statistics.  If you want to see a horse breeder in a state of desperation, then find a horseman whose best mare has just come up "empty" to a June cover by an expensive stallion on a no-guarantee season.
