How long is a Baseball game?

I'm planning on watching one on holiday in LA but the schedule:

http://losangeles.dodgers.mlb.com/la/downloads/y2008_schedule.pdf

says the game goes on for 3 days! Are these 3 days for the one match, or are there other games or reserves games etc?

Thanks!

  1. A baseball game typically lasts between two-and-a-half and three hours.

The game consists of nine "innings," but a game tied after nine innings will go into extra innings, played until there is a leader at the end of any inning.

Major League Baseball teams play 162 games in a season, typically arranged in three-game "series" played on consecutive days.  Some series are four games, some are two.  When make-up games are involved, there will occasionally be five-game series, or even a one-day meeting (the New York Mets are doing that today with the Pittsburgh Pirates, to make up a game rained out earlier in the season).

So, the three days you see for a single team are actually separate games, with a new game each day.  Your ticket will grant you admission to a single game, on a single day.

This following page has longest/shortest game records.  Some are "doubleheader" records.  A doubleheader consists of two games, played in a single day.  These are unfortunately rare these days, but will occasionally be played when a previously-scheduled game needs to be made up because of weather postponement:

The longest game, by time, in history, was 8h06m, on May 8, 1984, with the Chicago White Sox defeating the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-6, in 25 innings.

  2. Baseball is the only major sport not controlled by a clock.  As such the time to complete a game can run anywhere from two to five hours depending on the amount of offense and if the game is completed in the scheduled nine innings or goes into extra innings.  If you are going to a game I would suggest you leave your watch at home and just enjoy your time at the ballpark.

  3. In some stadiums, 440 to dead center.

  4. A regulation Baseball game is 9 innings. Depending on the game can be anywhere from a bit under 2 hours to 3 at least. Most games are between 2-3. But their is the occasion 6 hour game. Also its usually 3 games for the series. 1 9 inning game a day for 3 days.

  5. A baseball game lasts 9 innings. (Each side is allowed 3 outs per 1/2 inning. When all 3 outs are made the other team is allowed to bat, and to try and score.)

Typically this results in a game between 2 hours (abnormally short) and 4.5 hours (abnormally long) in duration.

The schedule you saw reflects consecutive games. Los Angeles might play San Diego on Friday evening at 7:05, and then the two teams would play again on Saturday afternoon at 1:05 (13:05) and the same on Sunday at 13:05. This schedule conserves the number of travel days that a team must use during the course of a season. Best Wishes, and enjoy the game!

  6. It's not the same game they are talking about the series

An average baseball game will last three hours (where one team is doing good or both are just playing average), a pitchers duel might last only two hours, and an offensive game lasts more then three hours

  7. Nine innings, usually, but sometimes it goes more when the score is still tied after nine, or sometimes shorter if inclement weather or other conditions imperil the safe continuance of the game.

By time? Baseball doesn't work to a clock, but a nine inning game will often end in in 2:30 to 3:00, unless it's a Red Sox-Yankees game, in which case 4+ hours is not unusual.

  8. I'm guessing your from the U.K. based on terminology but a baseball game while theroretically could go on forever they don't. This is not test crickett. They usually play a series of three or four games, although occasionally it is only two. But the winner is decided by who scores the most runs over a nine inning or if the home team is up at the time 8 and one half innings. If both sides are tied after this time it goes to extra innings. Basically this is a psuedo sudden death being that if the visiting team scores first the home team has a rebuttal turn in which if the match the other score another inning will be played or if thay exceed thay are aworded as the winner of that match. And it would go so on and forth untill it concludeds. I'm a little sauced up so my answer is the best I can do now. Hope it helps

  9. a standard baseball game is 9 innings maybe longer.  In time that evens out to about 2-3 hours.   RF  ( also a Cardinals Fan too!!!!)

  10. it really depends on how the teams perform

  11. It depends how many runs they get and how long they bat and bowl and field for.

  12. usually around 3 hours
