  2. Hi there,

the lenght of a school day in Germany depends on the type of school you are in.

If I'm just comparing it to the US High School (I think grade 10 to 12) then I should only compare it to a German Gymnasium (Oberstufe), so the last 3 years before graduation.

Day schools are not that common in Germany, but the number is increasing. Some schools in Germany also have lessons on Saturdays (usually every second Saturday), to make up on some of the subjects they could not cover during the week.

My last years in the German Highschool looked like this:

Monday to Friday morning (from 8am to 1pm)

    - 6 periods each lasting 45 minutes with two breaks

    - the classes you choose as your priority classes were taught in double periods, so would last 1.5 hours, were all others would just last 45 minutes

    - as your schedule was very tight and to enable you to take many classes were sports and other electives like drama taught in the afternoon

    - my shoul did not provide lunch so depending on the start time of my afternoon classes (2 times per week) did I go home to have lunch or did stay at school and had a sandwiche

  4. Hi.

My School in Berlin (as most schools I believe with some exceptions) starts at 8AM - then we have about 6 classes a day which last 45min. Between those classes are 10 minutes breaks to get to another class room. after the second class is a 20 minute break where you can go outside for example. then after the 5th class you get a 30 minute break for lunch which you can buy in the cafeteria or bring yourself. you are not allowed to leave the school premises until you are 18 or only with permission from parents. So your day ends mostly at 2PM unless you have PE which could start later that day at about 3 or 4PM. In the summertime when it gets hot we have shorter classes of 35 min each so you get to go home earlier !!! That's how it was in my school in Berlin. Hope that helps.

  5. A school day in Germany usually doesn't take longer then till 1 or 2 pm. A class takes 45 minutes, and they have approx. two breaks a day. In some secondary schools (Gymnasium) they have school all day which lasts till about 1600 hrs.
