    Basically the limit is five years for open (credit card) accounts and ten for loans (written contracts.)  The sites make the point that it is not illegal to ask you to pay and inappropriate action on your part can start the clock over.  There are also limits to how you can be asked to pay.  Read the material at the two listed sites to be sure you know what to do and not do if you are contacted about an old debt.
