How long is a term of an ambassador?

I need to know the term limits of the United States ambassadors.

  1. There isn't any set term. Since ambassadors are appointed by presidents, including both political appointees and career officers, they usually either leave or are transferred to another embassy at least when  the president leaves office. Even that isn't mandated, one ambassador to Israel served under both President Carter and Reagan, because the Israeli government asked that he stay on. Very few remain in one location for more than 3 or 4 years.


  2. Since they serve at the request of the President that assigned them it would depend on if the next president would want them to serve in that capacity also.
