How long is a16 foot extension ladder when not extended?

Question

Is the 16 feet the total length when extended? If so, I would expect 1-2 feet overlap. So would it be about 10 foot long when not extended?

Thinking about buying one and wondering if I can safely strap it to the top of my mini-van.

each rung is 1 foot between one to the other..You will have at least 1 or 2 rungs that extend further than the other half does..9 to 10 feet..37 year experienced painter...

16 foot extension ladder is made up of two eight foot sections.  They do not extend to 16 feet.  There is usually a two rung overlap.

usually it's half the length so 8 feet.
