    It's the largest division of geologic time, but doesn't have a set length. Generally, at least in geology, history is divided by major geologic or biologic developments, which makes for more "natural" divisions than just carving it up in specific chunks of time all of the same duration.

    For example, the Proterozoic is a period of time before complex life was common (protero = before, zoic = life) and lasted around 2 billion years, while the Phanerozoic comprises everything from the Cambrian to the present and is the period of time with visible life lasting 542 million years.

    If we had arbitrarily carved that up in 250 million year increments we would have a bunch of divisions that don't really line up with anything significant.
