  1. The length of a coastline depends on how it is measured.  If you measure every centimeter, the coastline can be very long.  If you only measure every 100 meters, it is much shorter.  Most coastlines are measured (surveyed) on 100 meter scales; this way, the coast of Wales is about 1208 kilometers.  Surveyors consider smaller features to be temporary, subject to change with tides and storms.

    But if you measured every centimeter, the coast would come out to about 12,000 km.
