You can either drive for over 10 hours along the Hume Hwy (all bushes) or catch a plane which takes around an hour.

Fly, to drive is a bit too much I think on a holiday, and fuel prices are bad here like everywhere else at the moment.  You can get a flight around $100, less if you get a special deal or an unpopular time.  Check Jetstar website, Virgin Blue and Qantas.  Type in relevant info you want and price will come up.  You don't relax on a long drive like that and the train is a killer, expensive too.

Flying is definitely the best option, it takes 1.5hours from Sydney to Tullamarine further to Avalon.

Jetstar only fly to Avalon which is a real hassle to get into the city and costs alot more in transfers.

Virgin Blue and Qantas fly to Tullamarine. At the airport they have special buses (skybus) that take you into Melbourne CBD to Spencer St station, with mini vans to take you to the hotel. The skybus costs $26 return.

If you shop around and buy when on sale you can get flights to Melbourne for as little as $89.

The flight is about 1 and a half hours. We took the train to Melbourne to see the countryside. It was about a 10 hour trip and interesting. The best part is going through all the, to us, funny, whimsically named towns. We then flew back to Sydney.. This is probably the best way as the train eats into your time to do both ways. BTW: Loved Sydney, stayed in The Rocks area. Melbourne is entirely different, but a wonderfully vibrant city with beautiful parks and good restaurants.
