A lot is in the shape of a right triangle. The shorter leg measures 90 m. The hypotenuse is 30 m longer than the length of the longer leg. How long is the longer leg?

my answer is 150 but i wanted to check it

  1. 120 is the answer ... 150 is length of hypotenuse...

    the ratios shud be in 3:4:5

  2. Let the longer leg be X

    Applying the Pythagorean theorm tells you

    90^2 + X^2 = (30+X)^2

    Expand:

    8100 + X^2 = 900 + 60X + X^2

    Subtract X^2 from each side and subtract 900 from each side

    7200 = 60X

    Solve

    X = 120

    That makes the hypotenuse 150

    The sides are 90:120:150, a 3:4:5 triangle

  3. yea that seems right just do a^2+b^2=c^2   it will give you your answer

  4. can't focus with that profile pic...... send me some

  5. you are correct.

    3-4-5  is a classical right triangle.

    so,  9-12-15  is also.

    and  90-120-150.

  6. x = longer leg

    x^2 + 90^2 = (x+30)^2

    x^2 + 8100 = x^2 +60x +900

    60x = 7200

    x = 120 m <-- longer leg

    So this is a 90-120-150 triangle

    Your answer of 150 is length of hypotenuse and not the longer leg.

  7. Hypotenuse squared = shorterleg squared + longerleg squared

    (longer + 30)^2 = 90^2 + longer^2

    2(30)(longer) + (30)^2= (90)^2

    longer = [(90)^2 - (30)^2] / 60 = 120X60 / 60 = 120

    Hypotenuse = 120 + 30 = 150.
