How long is the wait for a walk in written permit test at a California DMV?

I NEED to take my written test before the end of the month, however the online appointment system says that the first available appointment date is in mid September. I am considering going to the Santa Ana DMV as a walk in, and I was wondering how long I would have to wait in order to take the written test if I just do a walk in. I know that the dmv.ca.gov has the customer service waiting times on the site, but is that relevant to taking a written driving test?

  1. basically it depends on what time you get there. most places wont let you do the permit test after 4:30 but they started changing it to 3:30. just get there early and expect to spend a while in line. give it an hour to 2 hours. the test is fairly short but waiting around for your number to get called is a *****.
