  2. As others have said, I think the waiting list in the US is quite long.  Here in Canada I was able to walk onto a lot and buy one, no pre-order.  It was the last one available though until September when they would be getting three more, two of which were already sold.  I don't know if it would be at all practical for you to consider buying one in Canada and importing it to the US.

In terms of maintenance which a previous poster mentioned, I should tell you that they are under full warranty for the first four years or 50,000 miles.  Roadside assistance is included when you buy one.  And maintenance is recommended only once a year (including oil changes) or 10,000 miles or 15,000 kilometres, so that is far less expensive maintenance than for any vehicle I have ever owned - and that is quite a few.

Of course it seats only two people - that fact is well known - so it is obviously suitable only for people for whom that will work.  The gas mileage is about the same as a Prius for example, but the advantage is that the maintenance is far less, and the initial cost is several thousands of dollars less - here the difference is almost $10,000.

So put your name on the list if it's small size is suitable for you.  I like the Smart car tremendously.

  3. How long of a waiting list

    --------------------------------------...

    Hey folks,

I'm officially in love with the smart fortwo and had a blast at the test drive. I just head that due to production limitations they will only be bringing 16000 units to the US on 2008, against some 45000 reservations. Is the importing expected to pick up in 2009? How long of a waiting list do you think this will translate into?

I'll be finishing college in december, and there are lots of jobs in my feild but I don't yet have one waiting for me just yet, so I'm sorta reluctant on putting in my $99. Should I just do it now because I'll be sitting on a waiting list for so long?

The answer to your question is anyone's guess. US Production totals for 2008 may have already been bumped up to 20,000 units.....whether it will (can?) go any higher in future years. I think the 45,000 reservation number is way high, it might be nearer 30,000 at this point. Suffice it to say, most believe the 2008 production run is spoken for. My guess is the reservation system won't stay open forever, especially after the dealers open next year, so I'd suggest to submit your $99 to get a jump on 2009. You can always get it back if someother route to a Smart comes available to you.

  4. 9 months. I read that about 1 week ago.

It is not a gas saver or money saver so I would not get one. It is not reliable, it cost as much as bigger faster cars if you get the A/C option and cd player.

It is also not reliable and expensive to maintain since Smart is a company owned by Mercedes.

And the Smart Fortwo only seats 2 people and has no real trunk space.

It only gets 1-3mpg better than the Honda Civic, Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, and Nissan Versa.
