How long is too long to wait to see the eye doctor about this ?

I have had a flashing white light in the corner of my eye since last Friday that occurs at random and from reading around think my retina might be detaching. I made an eye appointment but can't get in until next week. I have read around and heard its not good to wait too long to see a doctor because you can go blind. Will next week be too late ?

Not neccesarely, but really...time really can be of the essence though - so I would still suggest ASAP
