Does anyone know how long it takes a pipevine swallowtail chrysalis to hatch? Do they stay in throughout the winter? We have 20 chrysalises and weren't counting on long-term guests!

Thanks in advance for any serious help.

  1. They overwinter as chrysalis, and will emerge next Spring/early Summer. How cool that you have 20! :)

  2. Hmm... I've had experience with gulf fritillary and black swallowtail chrysalids and they took a couple weeks.

According to Animal Diversity Web pipevine swallowtail chrysalids overwinter in colder regions or 'hatch' in a few weeks where it's warm.
