  1. It depends what FAR part the flight school operates under.  It takes about 40 hours on average to earn your private pilot's license.  This varies depending upon how often you can fly.  Weather and money often restrict the frequency of flying, which can make the process take longer.

  2. you get to fly it on your first lesson!

it will take about 8-12 hours of training for you to be able to fly (actually land - flying is easy)  it by yourself (student solo ) another 2-5 hours training for solo away from your airport with restriction on range and airports you can land at)

another 40 hours of combined training/solo practice to get your license - from there it is just how much more you want to learn, and refine - the more you fly/land, the better you get at it (assuming you have the basics correct)

it is very addicting!  try to take two lessons a week for best skills development/retention.  if you are in school, try to revolve your project/reading around the airplane, takes care of two things at once.

  3. Depends, do you want ot learn to land?? Or are you planning on flying it into a building?? Would cut the time it takes by a number of flying time hours. Ring any airport near you and I'm sure they can put you in contact with a flying school in your area. Alternatively, get a number from phone directories.

  4. If you're serious in your studying and training you can solo in a weekend, and have the Private Pilot certificate in 30 days.

  5. In the USA, You can qualify to get a basic Light Sport pilot's license (certificate) with a minimum of 20 hours of flight training.  With a Light Sport license, you can fly small 2-seater airplanes during daylight hours only.

Figure cost at  around $75-80 per flight hour to rent the airplane, and another $20-25 per hour for the instructor.
