How long must you have a permit in order to get a driver's license in NEW YORK!?

I'm going to New york over the summer and was wondering how long someone needs to hold their permit there in order to get a driver's license. i'm 17 and have never had a permit, but i also hear that you can do 20 hours of driving with a permit instead of 6 months of holding it...

i really want my license and because i have lived overseas my whole life (military), i have not been able to get a permit.

do i have to wait until i'm 18?? Or can i get a permit, do 20 hours of driving, some classes, and apply for a license? Or does New York require six months of permit holding??

New York does not require that you wait 6 months.  If you do not wait, you will get what is known as a limited use jr. license.  After one gets their learner permit, they must go through either a driver education course or a 5 hour classroom training course.  If you do not do the driver education course, you must have the 20 hours signed off by a parent or guardian.  You will also need your original birth certificate (not a copy, not a hospital record and not a baptismal record) or valid passport, your original and signed social security card and 4 more "points" of ID.  If you can not come up with the additional 4 points of ID,  a parent or guardian with a New York license or 6 points of ID and their birth certificate can fill in a form attesting to your identity.  Your birth certificate (or current passport) and social security card are still mandatory.   If you are under 18, you will also need parental consent.  You should visit the NY dmv website and look under "new driver" for more information.  Good luck!

I believe you need to have your permit for 6 months before you can take your driving exam and you still need those driving hours and a course before you can do that
