I recently underwent a job search and it took nearly 5 months before I got an offer.  I think it depends greatly on what kind of job you're searching for.  If you're looking for a nursing job, you'll probably find something within a week.  But if you're creative writer, it could take much longer.  It also greatly depends on what market you're looking into.  Larger cities offer more job opportunities that more rural areas.

No average time.  Too many variables.  It's taken me anywhere from 2 days to 4 years.

Keep looking.  Take any job you can and still look for what you want.  You'll at least have money coming in.
