How long should I isolate a new parakeet from a pet store before I put it in with my five others?

  1. Good practices is 30 days...  but if they come from a safe hatchery  NPIP, it's probably okay right now.  A vet check is always good for new birds...


  2. For about 30 days. Or you could just take it to the vet right now to make sure nothing's wrong with it and then you could start introducing.

  3. If possible...it would be good to keep it in another change near the other birds. So it get's used to them being around. You could also put it in the cage for a few short pieriods just to help get him ajusted. After about a week or two it should be ready...I personally have done this.

  4. 30-90 days...depending on how healthy it appears and how much you trust the pet store you purchase from. Isolation includes, but not limited to, being in a separate room (with the door closed), no shared toys or stands, and careful washing of hands and clothes to avoid cross contamination. kjl
