Question:

How long should I keep a skinned knee covered up?

I skinned my knee pretty badly in a biking accident wednesday. It is still reddish in some areas and bleeds/pusses at times. What's bad is there is a small upraised patch of skin that got peeled back, but when I covered it with a bandage, molded back on. It's bleeding some underneath there, but I'm afraid to disturb it. I had to go to the doctor Thurs anyway, so I had him look at it. He said to keep it covered up, but how long do I keep it covered? It's been 3 days. My mom thinks I should leave it uncovered to dry it out, but I'm worried it could get infected. It still looks so grotesque, hasn't made much progress healing. I keep it covered with a sterile pad and antibiotic cream, though I took it off overnight to let it breathe.

My mom is usually right about these things, but my doctor and my brother who is a physical therapy major say to keep it covered with cream on it. But, how will it heal when it's kept moist with no air getting to it? I cleaned it with peroxide (Dr. says do this 2x a day) and let it get some air this evening since I've just been hanging around the house, but I've already gotten a bunch of cat hair and fuzz on it. Doesn't want to seem to dry up. Anyone have experience with this sort of thing?

  1. Usually until it scabs up. Be sure to put some Neosporin or some other kind of cream on it, it may help heal the knee faster.  Good Luck!

  2. I'm not a doctor or anything but usally when I get skinned up I wear the bandages durring the day and then let it breathe when i go to bed. Then in the morning I put on fresh bandages. hope I helped!
