Question:

How long should I stay at my first job after college?

I've been at my current job for almost 9 months now. It's been a year and 3 months since I finished college. My job is not what I expected. I had been job hunting for 3 months when I received this job offer. Since I was sick of looking around for a job and going to interviews, I decided to take the job. Besides, I have a child. One of the biggest reasons for which I dislike my job is not being able to expand my skills. I have not learned much at this position and have not put into play what I've learned in school. I feel uncomfortable at my job as if I'm a nobody. I've been tempted to start applying at other locations but don't know what to do. Any suggestions?

  1. Nine months is NOT a long time for a professional job.  You need to stay at least 2 years really.

  2. Nine months is a long time.

Maybe you should start looking for another job in which you are qualified for.

    Something that will challenge you.

    Good luck! =]

  3. Just keep on finding one. I know how it is to stick to one job after college. It is comforting, but I worked for a place for eight years after graduating. My regret is that I didn't leave. I now had to quit for personal reasons and now I have  limited experience in what I graduated for. So just keep on finding one something will come up. I was looking for a job for 3 mos. Some jobs I didn't like and some jobs didn't call me back. But a good job fell on my lap. I just kept on looking and looking. That's what you have to do sometimes. If you are down for some reason, rent "The Secret" on DVD. It might pick you back up. Keep your hopes up and don't stop searching!
