Question:

How long should I wait after oral surgery before I play my instrument?

I had my wisdom teeth removed about a month ago, and I've been eager to start playing my trumpet again. I've tried practicing and I still get small pains in my gums from it, despite feeling just fine when eating or talking. Will I do any kind of damage to my mouth if I decide to tough it out?

  1. If it's been a month, you should be ok.  Just make sure you have followed the cleaning regime your oral surgeon gave you... it will speed the healing process.

Also, if you want to practice, try taking a couple Advil before hand... your nerves may still be a little sensetive to the vibrations, so stop the pain before it starts (isn't that their slogan?! lol).

If you find that after 2 more weeks you still have pain, call your oral surgeon... 6 weeks should be more than enough time to heal, and if there's still pain, then something's wrong.

But doing damage by practicing?  Nah... just make sure you don't over do it and push your muscles to exhaustion.  Have fun!  :)

  2. Best idea??  Wait until your oral surgeon gives you the OK.   Call his office and get his opinion... you don't want to do anything that is going to delay the healing.

    That is my suggestion.

    Thanks for reading.

  3. If you have pain, you should wait.  Go back to your doctor, and let them know you are having pain.  You could possibly have an infection.

The incision could look completely healed, but that doesn't mean it is healed under the skin yet.  Give it time.  Better to be safe than sorry.

  4. I would suggest that you wait till there is no more pain.
