How long should I wait to buy cheaper plane tickets?

My bf is moving to California in the 19th which makes me depressed. I'm going to visit him around September 11-13th (a mon, tues, or wed.) for a week.

I looked at some right now and cheapest I saw were probably $223

I dont think you should wait any longer. You probably will not be able to find a cheaper price for that flight.  Have a good trip!

For cheap air tickets try to book on the weekdays instead weekends

it depends on where you're flying from and the airline. try southwest.

i've had good luck buying tickets six to eight weeks prior and i've had great luck buying the day before the flight.
