How long should I wait to go back to work after being sick with a stomach virus?

Ordinarily the answer would be "Whenever I feel like capable", but I'm a cook, and even though some around me don't really seem to care at all about that little fact, if someone had cared about that before they made _my_ food, I wouldn't have gotten sick in the first place.

As you can imagine I'm a little raw about making the public's food while still being sick.

Also, I was first sick 6 days ago, and was pressured into going back to work 4 days ago (way before I felt ready), and of course it all came back just as strong as it did the first time and I had to leave suddenly, again. I'm still very nauseous and can't stand for too long before I start to feel worse.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

  1. Go to a health food store and buy ginger in a capsule form.  This spice will help your stomach upset.  It is used by pregnant women who have morning sickness and by people who have motion sickness.  Your illness needs to run its course stick with broths, chicken soups, rice, toast. Eat blandly.

I wonder what the city's health department would say if they knew you were ordered back to work prematurely!

Hope you feel better real soon!

  2. CDC (and your friendly local health department) recommends that you stay home until 48 hours _after_ your symptoms resolve. We understand that that's a lot of lost time and that you have bills to pay and that the kitchen is very busy without you, but it's the only way to be safe and prevent outbreaks of stomach virus from spreading to your restaurant patrons.

I applaud your willingness to prevent outbreaks of foodborne illness. I hope you recover quickly. In the meantime, it's okay to take an Immodium to relieve your diarrhea.
