Question:

How long should a fridge be left to "settle" after moving?

I'm moving house on Sunday and I have to transport my fridge freezer lying down as I can't stand it upright in the van.

What I need to know is how long should it be left before I turn it back on and does the same rule apply if it's a frost free appliance?

Thank you! DD x

  1. At LEAST 24 hours. It's not worth taking a chance on ruining the fridge.

  2. the longer its lying on its side the longer you need to let it stand up right the issue is there is oil in the compressor and when its on its side it leaks into the lines and if you plug it in and there is no oil in the compressor you will burn it up. rule of thumb is for every hour its on its side you need to let it stand up right for three before you plug it in.

  3. Best is to give it 24hrs.I have heard of ok after 6hr but IMO you are taking a risk.

  4. I'm pretty sure you shouldn't lay a refrigerator down to move. Every box they come in makes a big deal about this. The compressor and other components aren't designed or installed to take the shocks of moving in a horizontal position. As for the question you asked, you don't have to let it rest. You will have to wait about 12 hours for it to reach the temp setting once you plug it in.

  5. My daughter moved her freezer and had to ask the same question. They told her 24 hours to allow the freon to go back where it was supposed to be.
