  1. One page only.  For a career oriented professional type job you would also want a cover letter.  Most HR people get hundreds of resumes for a job and simply aren't going to take the time to read a multi-page one.  Simplest way to shorten it is by removing references and putting available upon request.

  2. One to two pages. Only use the front side of the paper and make sure you purchase a paper made out of cotton, it looks a lot more professional.

  3. thing to remember.  A resume is a sales document, designed to get you in the door. It's a sales document and is used...sadly...to screen you OUT.  This is why you make it a sales document....to screen you IN.  HR folks get 50 applications for each job.  It should be an accurate, but positive portrayal of you.  It should sell your attributes.  If you're just starting out and graduated from school.  It still should be sales oriented.  Example:

    XYZ College - 2008 BA Liberal Arts

          * President - Liberal Arts Club

          * Captain - Intramural Chess Team

      (al the above shows leadership)

    Practical Experience'-

    2004-2008   XYZ Company

         Supervisor - Supervised 40 workers in the manufacture and packaging of widgets

          * Reduced accidents by 5%

          * Improved operating efficiency of shift by 4%.

          * Reduced per unit cost by 1%

          * Saved the company $15,000 annually through waste savings.

    If you have to eliminate something, eliminate the fact that you delivered papers, or cut old man Johnson's grass or fed his cat.  Professional experience only.

    For newbies to the job market:

       Resume should be one page.

    For Veterans

       Try and keep it to two pages or less.  But keep it accomplishment oriented and save some accomplishments for the interview.  However..if you need a 3rd page...go 3.  Don't go back any farther than 10 years if you can help it.  Besides, they'll know how old you are as soon as would walk through the door.
