  1. First try and find out what your district's expectations are.  For instance, when I taught 2nd grade we had an hour each for reading and math and 30 min for science and social studies.  Now with the emphasis on reading and following the guidelines for Reading First schools, many districts now require a 90 minute reading block which is separated from writing.

  2. Try for about 45 minutes each. Pay close attention to your kids. See how long they can stay focused for one thing and work with that.

  3. Hey there! I understand that this is your first year teaching second graders. I have been a teacher's aid for many grades and seen how the teacher teach in those areas. My advice to you is do your homework on your lesson that you are planning. What I mean is reading the teacher edition book that explains what you are teaching, the state standards and etc. Around there should tell you how long you should spend on your lesson. Math lessons should be about 45 minutes or 1 hour. But it depends on what you are teaching. Like I said, "Do your homework."

  4. I believe in most schools they give you a time when you're suppose to teach certain subjects and for how long. Although, if you're teaching second grade you don't want to make the lesson to long as that will allow the children to lose concentration. I say anywjher from 30-50 minutes is good depending on the subject.
