Well we had two dogs, one is a chao mix and the other was a rott, the got along great. The rott was a male and the other was a female.

The rott passed away a couple of weeks ago and we just got a new dog which is a male, rott mix, and around 11 months old.

Our chao mix is friendly around others but i just want to know how long it should take for them to get along. Soon when school starts no one will be home with them.

  1. Do not leave them alone when school starts!   It usually takes a couple of weeks for dogs to get along well, and that's still no guarantee.  It would be wisest to leave them in separate areas of the house where they can't get to each other while you are gone (I am a big fan of kennel crates... keeps your house and the dog safe from one another).  You don't want to come home to a bloody mess because you thought that they were friendly together.  Remember, they are just dogs.  They will still act like dogs.

Give them a good month or so.  They will probably be fine before that but it gives you a good cushion "just in case."  You will be able to identify issues and correct them.  Eventually you will just have to let em go and see what happens.  Don't leave for long periods of time at first.  Maybe make a quick run to the store.  Gradually extend the period of time left alone.  I wish you the best of luck!

  2. I'm sorry for your loss!

It will probably take a few months.  Your new dog is still just a puppy and he is learning by following your female around.  It's a great start that they already get along.

The pup will learn when to back off - your older dog will make sure he knows when enough is enough (not by hurting him...but she'll tell me).

  3. I had an akita which was 8 or 9 years old when my parents bought me another akita...The older one was honestly one of the best dogs ever, she wasn't like a normal akita she loved everyone...She was great  with our puppy who was a male until it would be too much and annoy her after a while and would pick him up and move him. she never ever fought with him..They got into a couple fights but only over food..nothing else. make sure you feed them completely away from each other. just because a chao and rott are very big strong dogs they could really do damage towards each other ...good luck!

  4. Well, There is no specific time that this should honestly take. Here are some tips however on how to get them along.

    1. Keep a door open for the smaller of the two, so that he has a safe room to retreat to.

    2. Make sure both are on a leash when you are trying to keep them together at a time and let them sniff each other out, and get used to each other.

    3. Make sure that you own a choke collar, as a Regular collar pulled back on a dog can hurt them horribly. A Regular collar applies hard pressure on the Frontal area of the dogs neck, and a choke collar applies even pressure all around is neck, so that you have control, and its less painful for the dog...

I hope my information helped you :)
