At the gym I go to there are 13 weight machines that I use in a ciruit. But it takes me sometimes over 2 hrs. to finish it, I do about 5-6 sets on each machine or more (10-12 reps). But I want to spend more time using free weights, so what should I do?

  1. I imagine that the machines use various muscles in the body, perhaps even all of the muscle groups.

If you are looking to really looking to increase gains in mass and strength you want to isolate your workout. You need to do 10-12 sets each day with 1 or 2 muscle groups. You do not want to work every muscle group every day. Remember your muscles do not actually build mass in the workout, but in the rest days following the workout.

    So for example -

Day 1 Chest, biceps (10-12 sets each)

Day 2 Shoulders, back (10-12 sets each)

    Day 3 Legs (15-18 sets)

Day 4 Triceps and anything else (10-12 sets each)

    Day 5 rest

Doing that should take you about an hour in the gym.

You will definitely want to get into free weights, that is when I started putting on a lot of muscle.
