Question:

How long should it take to clear a cash deposit?

I created a checking account with TCF bank near my home in Illinois. I went on vacation in Indiana and deposited $325 in hopes to order parts for a computer today in Indiana and expect the parts to arrive the same day I arrive home. The teller gave me my balance and it read what it should and I checked online and it gave me the correct total.

Then I went to order my parts online and got an SMS from Newegg (the parts store) telling me that transactions had failed. I checked my bank account online and my $325 was missing! I've had trouble with TCF's online banking and have learned not to believe its postings and if any of you have used Newegg.com before, then you would know how reputable they are.

Has anyone had similar problems and would my depositing into the account from a different state change anything or delay the clearing of the money?

  1. If you deposited the cash at an ATM, it might take several days for the funds to clear, as often times ATM deposits are not counted at the branch, but sent to a regional sorting facility for counting/crediting.

If you deposit the cash at a teller, during normal business hours, and have no other liabilities/bills/debits pending, the transaction is typically available either instantly, or at the end of the business day, or the beginning of the next business day.
