Question:

How long should leave the roofing contractor's sign in my front yard?

The company did an excellent job at a great price. It's a small, family outfit and I want them to keep getting work. On the other hand, I don't really want a billboard in my front yard for too long. What is proper etiquette here?

  1. i would give it a week. everybody in the neighborhood should have seen the before and after by then

  2. Take it down when they finish. You were happy with their work, you paid them; that is all they are entitled to.

Besides, most towns have ordinances prohibiting advertising signs posted on private property without a sign permit; we allow them for contractors while they are actively working the job, as long as they are not in the public right-of-way. When they are done, they must take their signs with them.

  3. If there's nothing in the contract restricting you, it's your call.

I have not heard of any etiquette regarding contractor's signs, but I think leaving it there for a month would be reasonable.   Leaving it for more than six months would probably be above and beyond the contractor's expectations.

  4. Obviously this is your call, everyone got what they wanted.  I would let the contractor know the next time he is in the neighborhood to remove the sign and don't show any attitude at all.  You have done him/her a favor and they should pick up on that.  I would give it a week at the most and then remove it yourself.  If he is a good businessman, he will be buy in a few days.  He might of just forgot about it.

  5. I would say leave it no longer than 2 weeks. Take it down and call them thanking them again for the job, and telling them you have their sign sitting out back. *You don't even need to mention that you took it down, they should get the message when you call and say you saved the sign for them.

  6. oh give the contractor a break leave it for 30 days don't p**s them off you might need them in the future if they have to come back for problems let's say after a big rain and leaks. If that happens I would put the sign back up with an additional message good or bad let them decide what your additional message should be. SAVE THAT SIGN FOR YOUR ADVERTISEMENT!!!!!!

  7. While the job is going on, it's customary for some companies to advertise via a sign in the yard. Once the job is complete, I'd give it 2 - 3 days, then remove it. Call the company and let them know that you have their sign so that they can come and get it for future use.

  8. For a great job and great price a few weeks would be great for a small business, also word of mouth to your family and friends helps a lot too. These small businesses are the true backbone of our country and I give them my business over the big boys any opportunity I can.

  9. My contracts specify that I have to remove my signs within two weeks of job completion.

Why don't you take the sign back to them, thank them for a great job again.  Those signs do cost money.
