  1. hi, I love the personality of a border collie. They are so sweet.

  2. Well, he should play until he gets a little tuckered out, but be carful about it. At that age, and that breed, it is easy to over do it. I would suggust tossing a very soft ball around, and see what he does with it. Maybe a stuffed anmal, or just running around with him.

  3. my golden didnt stop playing til the end, but he can play with other dogs, toys stuffed animals.. and so on

  4. 10-15 minutes at a time with lots of breaks between play periods. so, if you play for one hour, play for 10 minutes, take a 5-10 minute break, etc. Also, lots of potty breaks after play time.

Playing with other puppies in a structured environment (puppy play school) is a great way for your puppy to practice canine communication.

Playing at home, you can teach tug or brief games of fetch. The link below includes a description of a variety of toys and how to use them, including tug.

  5. Border Collies are dogs that need a job, if he does not have something to do 24/7, your house will be shredded to pieces. I would recommend taking him to obedience classes, then consider doing herding, or agility with him, that is a good way to channel all that energy. Since he is only 3 months old though, yo can't put him in any classes yet, so play with him all you can! Border Collies need mental and physical stimulation every day.

  6. Well he will play as long as you let him.  You have to teach them to play, so practice as many games as you can think of.  You might also sneak in some "come", "sit", and "stay" around this age.  You might also want to practice with the leash at this age too.

  7. Until hes tired! Give him a chew toy and play fetch with him, take him for walks! He'll decide when hes done

  8. I have a Lab/Border Collie mix that I adopted from the local pound at 5 weeks.  I didn't know much about Border Collies and how  active they were, so I walked him around the yard several times per day. By coincidence I had a first visit with a Veterinarian. He was alarmed that I was exercising the pup because he told me that puppies need a lot of rest. A little play, but mostly eating and sleeping. He said my pup was dehydrated and in shock, and had to inject water/fluids in his back. He also gave me some rich/delicious nutrient to administer by eyedropper to build him up.

I felt terrible that I harmed my own little puppy, but also felt blessed that I had that doctor's appointment.

So, I think you should check with you vet about the exercise...he/she should be able to give you this information for free. Just remember, at 3 months your dog is still a baby.

  9. Let him play for as long as he wants, as for toys etc, get ones that will keep him mind active as well.  My 2 borders love tug toys and kongs.

  10. Border collie? well border collies are very active and probably wont stop playing untill about 5 years old.
