Question:

How long should my dog stay on the treadmill?

I have a Cocker Spaniel and he's very high energy. I want him to get exercise every night on the treamill because I feel uncomfortable walking him at night. I have him currently on the treadmill for about 25-30 minutes on a speed of between 3.0 and 3.5 depending on his energy. Is this too much or too little? I was wondering if anybody has past experience and could suggest a proper treadmill training program since I'm winging it! Thanks.

  1. i think that good enough.

    i wish i had a tredmil :/

  2. I'm from Denmark and using treadmills on dogs is very alien to me, although I have heard of it before, so I'm afraid I can't help you with the time or the speed, but since he's that energetic, I'm wondering if he gets enough mental exercise as well as physical exercise?

I've always had Belgian Shepherd Dogs (Tervueren and Groenendael), which are high-active breeds and almost impossible to tire out physically, and I've always found that a good training and mental exercise session will tire out a dog just as much as a 30 minute jog.

  3. when he gets tired?idunno

i jus wanna say thats a great idea

    thnx!

  4. 25 to 30 minutes sounds just right for a cocker spaniel.  The speed is just right too (assuming that 3.0 means 3 miles per hour)

I agree with Voelven that mental exercise can tire a dog out as well as physical exercise.  Teaching your dog new tricks or doing obedience sessions in addition to the treadmill walking will make your dog less hyper.

  5. so walk him in the day

he doesnt wanna live his life inside

  6. A well conditioned dog that has used a treadmill consistently will benefit from 10 - 15 minutes a day. Dogs that have never used a treadmill should begin with 1 - 2 minutes a day. It is always a good idea to begin with a slow warm up and end with a slow cool down walk. Always consult your veterinarian before you change an existing program or begin a new exercise regimen for your dog. Additionally, you should be able to recognize when your dog is getting tired. Be certain to stop if your dog shows any signs of lameness

Do not leave the dog unattended under any circumstances, they may hurt themselves or suffer exhaustion if left on for too long.

  7. just put him on as long as you would walk him, 30 minutes sounds perfect.
