I am flying to a wedding this weekend where we will be drinking at the wedding (and likely afterwards). Our flight is early the next morning (6am flight). Will it be safe to take an Ativan then?

(This is my first time taking something for flying, but after having to have a flight attendant sit by me on a recent flight to talk me down from a panic attack, it was suggested that i try taking something).

  1. Ativan has the shortest half life af all major four benzos so you will be fine take before about 1/2 a pill prior to flight and take another half a pill if it doesnt calm you as you are boarding Ativan only lasts about 4 hours

  2. Not an expert, but it depends on your reaction to Ativan.

AND on the strength & dosage.  If it's a big'un & only  taken once a day, then it's strong, & I would be very leery of drinking for 5-8 hours.

If it's a very mild one--say where you take 2 -to- 4 in a 24 hour period, then the major effects would wear off in 2-4 hours.  I'm sure a healthcare professional will be along to advise your in more detail.

  3. It likely depends on how much you drink.  I recommend not having more than one or two drinks per hour, so you have a chance to metabolize some of the alcohol before taking Ativan. Don't take it if you drink more than that, if you're drinking past 12, or if you're hung over in the morning.  If you follow these directions, you can take a small dose after you're at the airport. It's really not necessary to drink a whole lot, but it sounds as though you might need the Ativan. If you've never taken Ativan before, you don't know how you will react to it.  It's just not worth the risk of death to drink a lot the night before.
