My mother passed away in May. She had a pre paid burial policy which paid all but $325.00 of her services (that was for the opening and closing of the grave and the newspaper article). A check was sent to the Funeral Home a few days after the services and a month later we received a bill stating they had not received a payment. After going to the bank and paying $29.95 to stop payment on the check I wrote them another check for $325.00 and took it to the Funeral Home and handed it to them (and to my fault did not get a receipt, knowing I should) thinking this would be the end. Yesterday we received another bill from them saying we did not pay. They have some excuse about some women quiting and leaving with some work undone. Well the check has not cleared the bank but I don't think after this long we should be at fault. Do you? Not only do we have to deal with the loss of our Mother but now all this mess!

  1. Talk to the manager in person, directly.

  2. I sympathize with your issue but unless they are trying to charge you late fees then there isn't much you can do. The debt is a valid charge.  However if they are forcing you to write another check then I would say you need to have them compensate for the stop payment charge.  It should either be deducted from the amount you owe or they should give you the difference.  Since this has been an admitted issue on their end for whatever reason, you should not be held responsible for stop payment on that check.

If you feel that this is a scam attempt then you can always just write the check and advise your bank that only one should clear and if two checks to the funeral home are given you can always turn around and sue them for the con.  Good luck and you have my condolences for your loss.

  3. This will just take a little patience to sort out.

You've certainly made a good faith effort to pay them. If I were you, I'd go back to their place of business to discuss the issue in person. If their former employee left work undone, that is not your problem. But be as nice as you can about it.

  4. Blessings of Peace take control.....So sorry to hear this.I would talk to the bank and inform them whoever cashes that check will be caught on the spot.If the person worked for the funeral home the funeral home is reasonable for their actions and the Should sue them for thief of funds..Yes very bad mistake not getting proof of payment.Still I would wait for info from the bank.I would also ask the funeral home to investigate and find the person that you gave your check to,cameras, employees, visitors.I feel since it was on the premises they should look into it.I wonder if you can somehow sue them for harassment?I won't keep spending money for the same thing unless when corrected I would be refunded....Seek advice...Pray and ask God for guidance, maybe indirectly your mom is trying to tell you something,Pray/Listen......The Spirit/Blessings of the Lord be with you..Love ya....Blessings Yahoo

  6. Stop payment again.  Get a money order or cashier's check.  Take it to the home and ask for a receipt.  Then it's their responsibility if they don't deposit it.

Sorry for your loss.  You shouldn't have to deal with this.  The funeral home should be more sensitive.

  7. take cash and get a receipt.

  8. Yes, that's absurd.  I would meet with the Funeral Home director and offer to give them another check minus the costs for two stop-payment fees and ask them for a receipt indicating payment in full.  If they refuse, I would send them a certified letter documenting everything that happened, including your conversation.  You might also include the check for payment minus the 2 fees as well and note that in the letter too.  Keep a copy of the letter including a photo copy of the check if you send one.

  9. Just show them copies of the checks you've already written them.  Have your brother show him the check that was written to them.  Tell them they have it, and that you aren't going to give them another check.
