How long should you leave fresh vegetables/fruit in your hamster cage?

We have had three hamsters, so we do have a lot experience with hamsters. However, one thing that has always bugged me is how long is it recommended to leave fresh vegetables or fruit in the cage?

Our current hamster Poppy loves carrots and will eat them up almost immediately. However, I gave her a grape (that I cut in little pieces) and she ate most of it, but I found a little left (I always use water bottle tops as feeding trays for fresh fruit and vegetables). So, it's not mixed with the regular food.

So, today when there was a little left, I took it out and Poppy seemed angry at me. LOL! She just got that look, like WHAT are you doing? But, it worried me to leave it in, I had put it in last night and I didn't want her digesting spoiled fruit.

How long do you leave uneaten fruit/vegetables in your hamster cages?

I appreciate your responses! =)

  1. You should give your pet fresh food every day and give it fresh water anywhere from 1 to 2 days (depends on how much it drank and how warm the water got.)

  2. maximum 24 hours. dont leave it in too long because then it will rot and it might attract unwanted pests.

  3. i used to have rabbits and pet rats..

for me, if i put them in during the morning or afternoon.. i'd take the un-eaten fruits and veggies out before i went to bed.

if i gave them fruits and veggies at night like as a treat before i went to sleep or something, i'd just take the un-eaten food out in the morning when i woke up.

  4. I do the same thing as one of the previous posters mentioned.  I give my hammy fruits or veggies in the evening when she is waking up and let her enjoy them overnight and in the morning I take out whatever is leftover.  She doesn's usually finish it, so I feel bad to take it out, but she could get sick if the food is spoiled.

  5. i would leave them in there all day and take them out wen u go to bed but as there ruit and veg they will more then likely get eaten straight away

  6. the longest time to keep in the cage fresh fruits and veggies should be 24 hours.

i usually put them in at night then take them out the next day.

    hope this helps!

  7. I'd leave a piece of a grape 1 day. It's moist and will spoil quicker than a carrot slice and if the hammy hides it, I won't find it for up to a week.

I'd eat a grape that was on the counter for a day, but I'd hide it under my bed if I was a hamster.

  8. at the end of the day you should take all fresh veggies/fruit out
