How long should you let your parrots claws grow? Before you get them clipped?

  1. If you're getting little scratches when handleing your parrot then it's time to clip them.

    Bob also gets little marks on his head from preening when they are too long and sharp.

    I've just taken Bob the African Grey to the vets for his doing.


  2. If you invest in a rough stone perch or two, you won't ever need to clip the claws again. They are sold in all the large pet stores. They are expensive, but last forever and the parrot will love them. Keeps their beaks short too.

  4. I have 2 birds and what we usually do is when you hold them and there claws are sharp and hurt , then its a good idea to clipp them.

  5. The rule of thumb is this:

    Think of the letter C

    When they grow longer than HALF the letter C, it's time for a trimming:)

  6. well clip them when it hurts to hold them. it means their long enough to get caught in stuff and may pierce the skin if frightened. happened to me with a sun conure.
