Question:

How long should you wait?

for yeast to ferment into an alcohol. I was making the most basic type put in some fruit(bananas) warm water and yeast in a bottle covered. so when will it turn into an alcohol. I dont care about quality i just bet someone i could make some wine/alcohol with yeast water and fruit. So how long should i wait, also if you could tell me a way to make it stronger that would be great.

  1. 1 gallon water + 2 1/2 pounds sugar + 1 tsp wine yeast = sugar wine.

    boil the water,

    add the sugar, stir it until it dissolves

    remove from heat

    let it cool to room temp

    add the yeast.

    put in a fermenter (a container that is sterile)

    Cover with an airlock or balloon

    wait a week or 3

    your sugar wine should be ready


  2. it will start within a couple days and can take up to a couple months. Don't expect much alcohol out of it though unless you add additional sugar. I would recommend one to one and a half pounds of sugar per pound of fruit in a half gallon of water. Another tip, make sure it is not in an air tight container, CO2 will be produced and it could explode. Sanitation is also a factor, beer and wine are very susceptible to bacterial and fungal infection.

    If its not to late to start over, I would recommend mushing 2 pounds of bananas and add it plus about 2 pounds of sugar to about a half gallon of boiling water. Stir it up while it is still boiling for about 5 min. Pour this into a one gallon container and then fill it all the way up with bottled water. Wait until it cools to room temperature then add yeast and put a balloon over the top of your container. The balloon will give your CO2 somewhere to go and keep contaminants from getting in. Make sure that any thing that touches the must(must is the term for the liquid that will become your wine) is sanitized including the inside of your container and balloon. You can sanitize using household stuff by either dipping in boiling water or use diluted bleach and then rinse well with water. Give it about a month and I would guess it will be about 11%-13% aalcohol. Also don't forget to relieve the pressure from the balloon every now and then so that it doesn't pop.
