How long should you water your lawn in each spot? How do you know if you are over watering?

Put out a tuna can or a cup and water until you get 1" of water in it.  That is how much a healthy lawn should have per week.  Overwatering, you can't do if you have sand.  With clay, the water will not absorb if watered too much, it will just basically it at the top.
