Question:

How long should you work at a new job before asking for vacation time?

I just started working for an attorney at the beginning of the summer and am wondering when would be an appropriate time to ask for vacation time. After working 6 months? A year? I am the only help he has as of right now so it's obviously harder for me to ask for time off, but I don't plan to for a while as I'm just establishing myself in this job. When is it ok to approach this subject with a new employer, and given my odd situation (me being the only help) what should I reasonably expect?

  1. I would say about six months.Maybe a year.It depends on your job.And more importantly it depends on your boss!Is he nice?Well try a year then if he says no then you have a crazy boss!

  2. You can approach that at any time. You do need to plan ahead. In general people accrue vacation time after a year's employment, but some larger companies do so earlier. It sounds like your boss has never hired anyone else, so perhaps he's lost, too. It would be normal to expect two weeks after a year's employment.

  3. A year.  It takes a year to accumulate the vacation days.  What was the agreement when you were hired?  How many vac. days do you accumulate per month? How many sick days?  You need to find out this information.
