How long should your essays be for getting into college?

I'm applying to some state schools in Texas and need an idea as to long my essays should be?

  1. Almost always (and at all the schools I ever applied to for undergrad, public and private), the school gives you a limit so you don't have to worry about making it up. It's definately under 1000 words, which is really short.


  2. The above poster is right--the applications should give you an idea of how long your essays should be. If they don't, shoot a quick e-mail to the admissions office.

    But be aware that just because a limit is 1,000 words, doesn't mean you have to write 1,000 words. This is not the place to get wordy. Short and to the point will be appreciated by admissions counselors who read application for several hours a day.
