How long standard rate shipping would an item usually take from Hong Kong?

This   depends  on  several  factors...............  From  my   own  experiences  time   can  vary  between  25 -  56 days  from  HK to UK.

Surface  mail  comes   by  ship  &  it's just  like   catching   a  bus......some   stop  at every  little  village while  others are  express &  only stop  a few times.

I'd   suggest  using airmail  or   courier  as  airmail  usually   takes  between  three  &  eight   days  &  isn't  hugely  more   expensive than  surface  mail.
